Another theme in my work, since this early exhibition, is the dynamic interaction between natural forms and manmade construction.

Many of these pieces were inspired by a visit to Cuernavaca (Cuauhnahuac in the original Nahuatl, meaning “near the trees”) in Mexico, where I saw the hacienda of the Spanish Conqueror Cortes, now itself completely conquered by the trees which have invaded it. Nature and architecture have fused until it is no longer possible to distinguish plant from stone, the structure from the infiltrator, the penetrator from the possessed.

At the same time, I portray the fluid plant growths as forms of the unconscious, insinuating themselves into the rational structures of the mind.

As with “Life and Limb”, my work continues to celebrate the power of Nature and to challenge the system of distinctions by which mankind has tried to order the universe.
